When I was a boy

  • cityscope-boy

I had a 20g Long as my first aquarium when I was 11 years old.  Back then, the rule was 1" of fish per gallon, and I didn't like that rule.  So instead of worrying about any fish, I decided to make it an invertebrate tank. There was no limit to how many you could add, which was awesome.  I remember getting:

Mandarin art

  • mandarin-ornament

Just in time for the holidays, I received my mandarin ornament to hang on the Christmas tree. For now, it's here on my desk but next week when the tree goes up, this little guy will be adding some flair to the menagerie of items I've been collecting.

A custom fan tray

While every fan tray I build is custom made to fit a particular sump, this one took more time and a little imagination to fit one customer's needs. This bracket will fit on a rimless sump, nestling down on the front wall and the inner partitian and stay there. I added a front and back piece to hug the spot so it won't be going anywhere accidentally.

It holds two 120mm fans, and is made of 1/4" clear acrylic. It actually took more time than it should have, but that's the nature of creativity versus a cookie-cutter product. I kinda like it. :)

Cooking Live Rock...

Cooking live rock (not curing rock) is a process that rejuvenates used live rock safely and inexpensively, although it isn't actually cooked. I'm a huge proponent of using live rock in a reef tank rather than dry rock because of the beneficial biodiversity on and in the rock. If you want to re-use rock from an older system, cooking it will prepare it for the new setup. All you need is saltwater, a pump, and a suitable holding container. You may want to add a protein skimmer and a heater if the circumstances dictate it.

3 year anniversary update

November 10th marked three years that the 400g Reef and 60g Anemone Cube have been running. This video is an update about everything, as well as a flashback to Nov 9, 2013 when I was about to fill the tanks with livestock. Unfortunately there was an audio issue in one portion, but lipsyncing was out of the question. If you have any questions, just ask.

Reef Keeping Tools I Use

The longer you have an aquarium, the more tools you'll acquire. It's nice to know what experienced hobbyists use, and I thought I'd share the stuff I turn to for the various projects I have to care for. You may think of some other things that would make life easier. Your imagination may help you invent the next best tool, so keep those mental gears turning.
