Don't get overzealous
Today is the 3rd day of 2017. What all did you do to your tank over the past couple of days to prep it for the new year? And if you did a lot of things, every wonder if that was a good idea or a bad one...?
Sometimes we get really proactive and attack our system, fixing everything we can while our hands are wet, so to speak. "I'll clean this, adjust that, add this... might as well correct that... remove this, push this over, glue this down, etc.." and it kinda devours your time and you change so many things at once, it can be detrimental.
It's good to be motivated, to get a list of things done. Just remember it's livestock and gradual changes are usually better than a massive spring cleaning. Reason it out and think will it help everything overall, or could it be a shock to the system.
For the past 24 hours, I've cleaned out my skimmer, cleaned off the heaters and determined one is flaking out, finally installed some fresh GAC in a reactor that hasn't been used in 8 months, refilled my biopellet reactor with new media that won't do a thing for a minimum of four weeks, and replenished the calcium reactor. I also scraped some of the coralline off the black acrylic in the reef, and dosed Prodibio which I pre-diluted in a cup of water. And two days ago, I pumped out a pile of detritus out of the refugium that was building up.
But that's about it for now. I don't want to stress out my corals.
